I’ve posted the first two chapters of Machiavelli, but have stopped there. I’m reevaluating my plans for the book. It’s become more and more clear to me that Machiavelli doesn’t really work as a web comic. I wrote and drew it as a novel. It was never really meant to be read in installments and I feel it’s ill-served to be read in that way. Machiavelli’s publication history (or rather history of non-publication) is a complicated tale that I can’t really get into here.

I feel I owe it to those of you interested in the book not to simply stop posting pages without some explanation. When I have more details on how I’ll be publishing, I’ll post here. If you’d like to be notified when the book is ready, send me an e-mail at don@donmacdonald.com and I’ll give you a heads up when I have a pub date.

People who know me IRL know that I’m nearly as crazed a 37Signals fan as I am an Apple fan. I’ve been using 37Signals’ Basecamp for a while now to schedule my work on Machiavelli and my other projects. This is the first post uploaded via iPad. Actually, the image and its preparation were done on the iMac, but the typing and editing of the post itself were done in WordPress using Safari for iPad. It works pretty well. I’ll be looking into creating Machiavelli in ePub format. Comics look wonderful on this thing.

Biagio Buonaccorsi describes life back at the office in his letter to Machiavelli, who is away on a diplomatic mission. Machiavelli was very popular with his subordinates, and their letters to him are full of good-natured profanity and “taking the piss.” Machiavelli and his Friends is an indispensible resource for these kind of letters, containing almost every letter written between him and his friends & family.
